The young soldier, convalescing from his wounds, arrived early at the lake to assist his father, a local fisherman.

As the warming rays from the sun cleared the mist enveloping the lake, an empty dinghy was revealed adrift off the shore. Reaching the stricken craft, he recoiled in horror upon perceiving a small jewelled brooch glinting on the floor of the boat; the unusual design instantly recognisable.
