A work of art is the tip of an iceberg of ideas and influences. In understanding the artist’s inspiration and process, our experience of the final work may be enriched. This book aspires to furnish readers with such an enrichment. The paintings contained herein are inspired by my visits to the Arctic Island of Svalbard. Svalbard is roughly the size of Ireland, less than three thousand people make their home on this polar frontier, with nearly 800 km of freezing ocean separating them from civilization.
