Kick Against the Pricks

Patrick Campbell

ISBN 9781916919525

Kick Against the Pricks is the third segment of my autobiographical explorations; it covers the period from the mid seventies to the end of the century. The last part to be written (my account of life in Thailand was published some years ago as Phuket Days), the delay is a consequence of my reluctance to commit to print details of the two most significant relationships in my life. I still wonder if it is the right thing to do. All I can say is that I felt a compulsion to do so. The account is necessarily patchy: it combines domestic matters with excerpts from a fitfully kept American diary, and a survey of the swingeing changes that transformed the university picture in the UK, especially in terms of English studies. Life in Spain, where my partner and l bought a house, is the main focus of the concluding chapters.
